Chapter: Chapter 2: New Century (Epilogue)
Since it was the Old Ones’ scheme, there was nothing more to say.
Xi Wei took Gabriel and started from the rear of the Church of Light, all the way to the city wall.
Fortunately, Gabriel was not a rigid person. After Xi Wei informed her that these followers had been contaminated by the Old Ones, she drew her bow and shot an arrow, killing the first “civilian” touching the city wall.
“Saintess Your Majesty!”
Everyone on the city wall saluted Gabriel, and Alenon did too.
Although theoretically he was of the same rank as Gabriel, in reality, everyone in the Church of Light knew.
The four Saintesses were more noble than all the bishops, second only to the Pope.
It was just that the Saintesses rarely interfered in the internal affairs of the Church of Light, so they seemed to have no power.
“Saintess Your Majesty!” Alenon looked up, his eyes suspiciously glancing at the knight in black armor beside her.
“Who is this by your side?”
He cared a lot about the knight’s identity.
Because the knight’s cold killing intent and evil armor did not make him look like a good person.
Which knight would carve skull patterns on himself?
Normal knights would have symbols like honor shields, angel wings, or greatswords.
“This is Your Majesty Winter.”
Gabriel shifted her position and introduced him to the Cardinal.
“I don’t have the ability of spatial teleportation. I heard that the situation here was urgent, so I asked Your Majesty Winter to bring me directly.”
“So it’s Your Majesty Winter!”
Alenon cast a reverent gaze at Xi Wei.
The deeds of King of Winter were widely spread throughout the North Continent. In less than a year, he rose from a lord to the King of Conquest. His experience was a legend that hardly needed any embellishment from a bard.
Even though Alenon was an old man, he couldn’t help but yearn for it.
“No need to be so formal. I have some acquaintance with your Church of Light… These followers have been infected by the power of the Old Ones, so it’s normal that you can’t see it. Kill them as soon as possible!”
Xi Wei pointed to the increasing number of followers below the city wall, his eyes cold.
“Kill them directly? Perhaps they can still be saved. I don’t see any signs of corruption on them. Maybe they were just confused…”
“Kill them directly,” Xi Wei interrupted the bishop’s naive fantasy.
“Ordinary people have no resistance to the power of the Old Ones. Leaving them now will only bring you trouble!”
As soon as Xi Wei finished speaking, a sharp howl came from below the city wall. Everyone looked down, only to see that the followers who were normal moments ago had transformed into the appearance of ghouls. Their bloodshot eyes seemed to bulge out from their sockets, sharp black nails grew from their hands, and they climbed towards the city wall, panting and spitting blood. Their mouths were contorted at an angle that was impossible for a normal person, almost reaching the back of their heads.
Alenon stared at the scene in astonishment, almost dropping his staff.
He had encountered no less than thousands of high-level undead and demon retainers. Some undead and demon retainers could indeed disguise themselves as normal humans, but no matter how they disguised themselves, they could not hide from his eyes.
However, these Old Ones’ retainers, he really couldn’t see any problems with them.
Not until they were completely transformed into ghouls.
And these ghouls were very different from the undead in this world.
The distant horizon was hazy.
The claws of the Old Ones were no longer concealed.
More and more ghouls showed their shambling bodies from the gaps in the forest. They flowed out like stubborn maggots from the wounds of the earth and forest, emitting an aura of decay and foul smell.
Among them were ghouls the size of ordinary people.
There were also monsters more than ten meters tall, appearing like stitched-together chunks of flesh. Their bodies were covered with gaping mouths full of sharp teeth and twitching eyeballs. They were like wriggling walls, and wherever they passed, the plants withered, leaving behind yellowed thick漿. Countless mouths emitted a “crunching” murmur.
“Ghouls again.”
Xi Wei narrowed his eyes.
He vaguely remembered a report submitted by the Scheming Frog, which mentioned that the orcs around the Goblin Tribe had dealt with ghouls. There were also orc bones and traces of Orc Shamans in that mysterious cave, as well as ghoul remains.
Subconsciously, Xi Wei linked the ghouls here with the ghouls near the Black Flag Tribe. Obviously, these creatures, which were vastly different from the native undead and exuded an aura of corruption, must have come from some Old Ones’ retainer.
He gave the Cardinal a look.
The Cardinal finally came to his senses and ordered the guards on the city wall to attack.
“Your Majesty Winter, you are indeed insightful. You saw that these people were not right at a glance. If they had climbed the city wall, the consequences would have been unimaginable!”
The Cardinal repeatedly bowed to Xi Wei, expressing his sincere gratitude.
These ghouls that had approached the city wall were not strong.
They looked more like cannon fodder dispatched by the enemy.
So, the defending army on the city wall only needed one round of volley fire to suppress these ghouls.
