Chapter 2: New Century (Epilogue)
Chapter 261: Inciting Defection (1)
Sensing the formidable strength of the handsome knight before him, Duke North Wind took two steps back, his gaze wary, and asked in a low voice:
“Who are you?”
“I am the King of Winter, here to inspect the defensive situation of Narvit Bastion.”
Xi Wei did not conceal his identity and told Duke North Wind directly, without holding back.
[Detected the current environment, daily Villain Mission triggered]
[Mission 1: Incite Duke North Wind to defect by any means necessary]
[Mission 2: Kill the tool person Polvert]
[Mission 3: Obtain command of the entire Emerald Fortress]
[After completing this Villain Mission, the System will enter upgrade status]
A prompt sound echoed in his mind. Xi Wei’s expression remained unchanged, and the smile on his lips grew even brighter.
“Are you Your Majesty, the King of Winter?”
Duke North Wind was slightly taken aback and showed great respect.
He didn’t know the King of Winter very well, only that he was a particularly young Champion Knight with immense strength. He had single-handedly overthrown the Kolon Empire and quickly stabilized the entire country after the war.
He wouldn’t comment on the King of Winter’s usurpation nor would he form any opinions about the King himself because of it. However, he would give the King and the genuine Champion Knight the respect they deserved.
“Have you reached a joint agreement with those two kings?”
“Forgive my presumption, but if you intend to enter the core area of Narvit Bastion, or even obtain command, you will need to show me written documents signed by them.”
Duke North Wind tidied his dirty armor and tied back his disheveled gray-white hair, trying to appear as neat as possible.
He had many questions.
Since the King of Winter had already reached an agreement with the King of Karari and the King of Medon, why would he send Polvert now to attack and take over the defense of Narvit Bastion?
Given that only the King of Winter had arrived, it implied that command was already in his hands.
Upon hearing this, Xi Wei waved to the knight behind him. The knight immediately took a stack of documents signed on sheepskin from a leather pouch at his waist. He then flipped to the last page, revealing a round oak tree seal with branches of venomous snakes.
Near this seal were also impressions of a sea beast and a soaring eagle, representing Karari, Medon, and the Wintery Empire, respectively.
Xi Wei took the documents and presented them to Duke North Wind.
Duke North Wind, in turn, took out an object resembling a pocket watch or a mirror from his chest plate and shone it on the oak tree seal.
*Clack—*
The object rotated slightly, and a soft white light flashed across its surface.
Duke North Wind nodded slightly.
He then put the item used for verifying seals back into his armor.
The seals were not an issue. They were indeed impressed by the base of the king’s scepter, and this small seal represented the king’s approval and stance.
Following closely, Duke North Wind gently opened the sheepskin and began to skim through the contents of the document. Meanwhile, Xi Wei glanced at Polvert, who was writhing on the ground, trying to escape. He then ordered his knight to capture him, and with two heavy blows, disabled Polvert’s Qi source and bound him.
The document’s content was not extensive.
Many of the clauses were very direct and simple.
However, the more Duke North Wind read, the more alarmed he became.
“All defending generals of Emerald Fortress shall unconditionally obey the King of Winter’s commands.”
“Surrounding towns shall prioritize supplying the King of Winter’s army.”
There were even more outrageous clauses, such as, “All city-defending tools on Emerald Fortress shall be taken over by the King of Winter’s army, and the original defending soldiers shall provide corresponding training on the use of these tools to the King of Winter’s army.”
Duke North Wind was bewildered.
Were the King of Karari and the King of Medon intending to hand over the entire Emerald Fortress to the King of Winter, including the command of the allied forces of the three nations?
He knew the King of Karari quite well.
He was a man lacking in ability but extremely stubborn.
Given his arrogance and petty nature, it would be impossible for him to sign such a document. Had the King of Winter forced him to sign it at swordpoint?
But then, what about Polvert’s sudden attack on Narvit Bastion?
Duke North Wind suppressed his doubts and returned the document to the knight beside the King of Winter. He needed more information to understand the situation.
“The documents are in order. I will hand over the command of Narvit Bastion to you as requested by the king, and I will assist in defending against the elves’ attack. However…”
Duke North Wind glanced at the heavily bound Polvert. He felt that his and the King of Winter’s positions were likely aligned, so he asked directly:
“Since such documents have been signed, why did the King of Karari send the Commander of the Royal Capital to take over Narvit Bastion? This action is completely redundant and depletes our human strength, giving the elves outside an opportunity. You came from the Royal Capital; do you know what His Majesty’s true intentions are?”
“And you mentioned earlier that my son is still alive?”
Duke North Wind rubbed his hands on his pants, looking at the King of Winter with hope.
His lips trembled slightly, causing his white beard to sway in the breeze within the fortress corridor, revealing how nervous he was at that moment.
“I know nothing about the Commander of the Royal Capital coming to take over Narvit Bastion. The King of Karari did not inform me of this; he concealed this information.”
“As for your son, Quainite, if I’m not mistaken, he is still alive.”
Xi Wei pointed his sword at Polvert and continued,
“The one killed by this commander was not your son. After all, no one would smile when they die. My men found several knights killed by bandits in a ruin in Karari.”
“They all had a snowflake-shaped family crest. One of them, a middle-aged man with fair skin, tender flesh, chestnut hair, and black eyes, survived because his heart was on the right side. This middle-aged man should be your son.”
“Yes… Your Majesty, that’s right!”
Duke North Wind knelt on the ground, burying his head deeply. His gray-white, aged hair was dusted with dirt, but he paid it no mind.
He tightly gripped the cold rubble on the Elemental Obsidian ground, his shoulders trembling, tears of joy streaming down his face.
“Chestnut hair, black eyes, a heart on the right side, and the snowflake-shaped family crest… He is indeed my son… Thank you, thank you for saving his life…”
“You don’t need to thank me. He was fated not to die.”
Xi Wei gripped Duke North Wind’s arm and helped the emotionally unstable old knight up from the ground.
In a sense,
Quainite, the Son of the North Wind, was indeed lucky. While targeted by players, all the knights died instantly, but he happened to not be killed by a headshot.
At that time, “Nobody Does Human Things (M),” operating under the principle of “leaving a line for future encounters,” did not finish off Quainite. Instead, he bound him and temporarily kept him in the ruins. After everything was over, this fortunate Baron Quainite was imprisoned in the dungeons of the Karari Royal Capital.
