Chapter 2: New Century (Epilogue)
The Cain Continent has numerous pantheons, complete with all sorts of gods, including even a God of Bathing and a Goddess of Menstruation.
Gods are the embodiment of the wish power of beings from the prime material plane, and they are the masters and manifestations of rules.
However, there is one god who is a universally reviled rat, hated by both sides of the law.
That is the neutral god, the God of Deception, Loa.
Followers of the God of Deception are detestable, whether in human cities or in the Gloomy region, their odiousness second only to the followers of the God of Shadows.
In reality, many people believe in the God of Deception.
For instance, gamblers, con artists, and some professionals engaged in diplomacy and commerce.
They would, to varying degrees, believe in the God of Deception to make their speeches more impeccable.
But they, as mere casual believers, could not be considered true followers.
True followers are beings who have mastered the divine power of the God of Deception.
And such beings, when they speak, utter lies ten out of ten times, yet it is incredibly difficult to find flaws in their words.
The God of Deception’s notoriety stems from ancient times.
When gods first bestowed their blessings upon the prime material plane, each god relied on their own labor to expand their follower base and spread their faith.
However, the God of Deception’s favorite activity was to swindle and deceive everywhere he went, claiming other gods’ miracles as his own, and luring away other gods’ followers. His lies incited divine wars between two gods, while he reaped the benefits.
This was even more extreme when reflected in the followers of the God of Deception.
People generally only weave lies when it is unavoidable and serves a purpose, but Loa’s followers treated lying as an art form, a part of their daily lives.
They used lies to turn father and son against each other; they used lies to exonerate evildoers; they used lies to break up harmonious families; they even used lies to instigate disputes between nations, leading to widespread death and destruction.
Later, the Emperor of Humanity declared a nationwide hunt for the followers of the God of Deception and ordered the demolition of all their shrines, which finally brought these masters of lying, who loved to stir up trouble, to a gradual halt.
Yet, countless years have passed, and these followers of the God of Deception still exist, living in the dark underbelly of society, much like the followers of the God of Shadows.
They disguise themselves with lies, donning various outwardly glamorous appearances, while secretly continuing to cause mischief.
Lies earn them the attention of the God of Deception, and a grandiose lie will please the God of Deception and grant them more divine power, so these followers spend their days researching how to deceive people.
“Your Majesty, a follower of the God of Deception has infiltrated the Shrine of the Goddess of Abundance. I believe it is necessary to conduct a thorough cleansing of all the believers within the entire shrine,” Yogg-Saron glared at Uller, turning to Xi Wei to make a suggestion.
“No need to rush,” Xi Wei shook his head. “Let’s first deal with the matter at hand. As for the followers of the God of Deception, I have a way to catch these rats one by one.”
Cities like Dragonflame City, which are still under reconstruction, have very weak infrastructure and public security. If a group of followers of the God of Deception were hidden within the city at such a time, it would be a miracle if the city didn’t face any problems.
“Uller, I now know your identity, and you have no need to continue deceiving me. Because no matter what, you will die.” Xi Wei leaned down, his cold gaze piercing this follower of the God of Deception.
He looked no different from an ordinary young man, wearing priest robes, fair-skinned, and even rather handsome. It was hard to imagine such a person being a scoundrel who spewed lies.
“I need to make that Bernas understand things more clearly. What role you played for Ailana and beside him, I want you to tell me everything, or I will make your life worse than death!”
He extended his hand and patted Uller’s cheek.
The young man immediately trembled all over from fear.
He looks like he only became a follower not long ago.
Xi Wei thought.
If he were an old follower of the God of Deception, he would certainly not be this terrified at this moment.
They would continue to think about how to weave lies.
They would even deceive themselves into believing they wouldn’t die, even when on the gallows.
“I… I… alas, actually, the beginning of this matter was Ailana coming to find me…” Under the fierce gazes of the knights, Uller lowered his head and began to recount:
“That day, as per the priest’s instructions, I was receiving commoners who came to the shrine to worship. When it was evening and there weren’t many people around, I met Miss Ailana. She said she had something she wanted to ask for the gods’ help. She said she wanted to replace Fia and become Bernas’s true wife. However, Bernas’s wife, Fia, was already pregnant, and she absolutely could not compete with Fia. Because the child would grow up and use the abilities learned from his father to protect his mother, while she had nothing but a beautiful face.”
The Goddess of Abundance could not possibly help Ailana.
And Ailana was also an uncultured woman with only beauty to her name.
Of all people, why would she go to the Goddess of Abundance?
Although the god ignored her, Uller found an opportunity within this to weave lies and cause trouble.
“I’ve only been a follower of the God of Deception for a short time and haven’t had the chance to offer a perfect lie to the god, so I decided to help Ailana.” Uller looked up at the dumbfounded Bernas, his clear black and white eyes filled with mockery.
“I used a Deception Spell to make Bernas believe that Ailana was suffering from a very evil curse and could only be cured by the blood of a mother in her eighth month or later. And Bernas indeed believed these words… In the end, as you have all seen, Fia and her child are dead. This was a successful lie~ I am finished explaining.”
Uller smiled. He knew he would be executed, but after confessing everything, he no longer felt fearful.
Originally, he was just the son of a farmer family, struggling to get by. After becoming a follower of the God of Deception, he used the most basic Deception Spell to live a life of no worries about food and clothing, and he even obtained a job as a priest in the Shrine of the Goddess of Abundance.
But all of this was ultimately a beautiful life built on lies. Now that it had been exposed, everything would vanish like bubbles along with those lies.
“I want to know, what reward did Ailana offer in this transaction?”
Seeing Bernas’s dazed and stunned appearance, Xi Wei still felt it wasn’t enough to vent his anger.
So, he decided to twist the knife further into the man’s heart.
“She paid a thousand gold coins,” Uller licked his lips and cast another malicious glance at Bernas before speaking. “Besides that, she also spent five nights with me. Putting aside everything else, I am not as discerning about women as Mr. Bernas, because Miss Ailana is truly amazing!”
