Chapter 2: New Century (Epilogue)
“Where is the Sea God’s Tear?” Pet roared, his eyes blood red as he lifted Gulu Silver Coin like a piece of chicken.
“L-Lord…” Gulu Silver Coin didn’t dare to look up. The claw gripping its neck was already making its liver and gallbladder tremble. It shivered uncontrollably from the aura of the lion beastman, stammering, “The, the Sea God’s Tear is gone! That person stole it!”
Upon hearing this, Pet’s heart nearly stopped.
The Sea God’s Tear was meant to cure the Queen. If it was gone, wouldn’t the Orc Emperor skin him alive and use him as a rug?
“Quick, tell me, who, who stole the Sea God’s Tear!?”
In his rage, Pet’s large hand tightened its grip. The goblin’s green face turned purple, and he let out muffled sounds from his mouth.
“Lord… I, uh…” Gulu Silver Coin struggled painfully.
In a daze, it seemed to see its grandmother. Its grandmother sat on a resplendent emerald throne, draped in a cloak woven with golden threads, wearing a golden crown, and holding a bag of gold coins in her hand, beckoning it forward with a smile.
Seeing Gulu Silver Coin’s eyes roll back up and its breathing become shallow, Pet finally relaxed his arm. He couldn’t kill this lowly goblin yet. At least this goblin had seen the mysterious thief who stole the Sea God’s Tear, and there was a high probability that this thief was the same person who stole the stall owner’s goods.
The grandmother in its vision seemed angry that Gulu Silver Coin wasn’t coming over. She took a hammer from behind a mountain of gold coins and hit Gulu Silver Coin squarely in the face.
Gulu Silver Coin’s mind went blank, as if surfacing from deep underwater, and its breathing suddenly became smooth. It greedily inhaled oxygen, and the surrounding noisy hubbub gradually became clearer.
The moment its consciousness returned, it dared not delay and quickly answered the lion beastman’s question: “Lord, it was a guy who looked human. He said he wanted to show us a magic trick. We were mesmerized because he spoke Goblin, but little did we know that after his trick, the Sea God’s Tear disappeared…”
It paused, trying to compose itself, and continued, “And that human even ‘committed suicide’ in front of me and Gulu Gold Coin, but his corpse didn’t remain. Only a stone was left in its place!”
Gulu Silver Coin grew angrier and sadder as it spoke. That was the Sea God’s Tear, worth ten thousand gold coins! But in the blink of an eye, it was all gone! It was all that damned human’s fault!
“His corpse disappeared after he committed suicide?”
“How is that possible?”
“This must be an illusion, or sleight of hand. Otherwise, why would a stone be left behind?”
The surrounding stall owners and buyers looked at each other, murmuring their theories.
Looking at the tearful goblin with bubbles coming from its nose, Pet pondered. He quickly extracted several key pieces of information. A human who could perform magic? And who could speak Goblin. “Dead” and his corpse would disappear, leaving only a stone… This was likely a form of substitute jutsu. Although he didn’t know what magic was, it was probably related to magic! All clues pointed to a mage. A human who had recently entered the Whirlwind Dunes, and a mage at that. These two points alone were enough to narrow down the search.
“I understand your grievances,” Pet waved his hand, silencing the discussion. “I have a good idea who stole your things. It wasn’t any of the buyers here; that thief has already escaped, but they should still be within the Whirlwind Dunes.”
“Lord Pet, please, you must help us catch that thief! Our clan’s goods were all taken by that person. If we can’t get them back, how will we live!”
“Yes, Lord Pet, those are our entire life savings.”
…
“All of you, shut up!” Pet frowned irritably. The empire had always prohibited the trading of potions in the Whirlwind Dunes, yet when he first arrived at the underground black market, he found more than one stall selling them. In the spirit of beastly justice, he had dealt with a few human merchants, but he had always turned a blind eye to merchants of beastmen and goblins. Yet now, these merchants, instead of being grateful, were constantly pestering him, which was extremely annoying.
Seeing the anger on Pet’s face, everyone immediately fell silent. After all, no one wanted to test the sharpness of the lion beastman’s slab-like single-edged axe.
Pet snorted coldly, casting one last glance at the timid stall owners and buyers, and then left without looking back. However, he did not simply ignore the matter. Instead, he went directly to the de facto ruler of the Whirlwind Dunes, Bart-Maxi-Earthshaker.
Bart was a pure-blooded Orc, with dark green skin, two tall, sharp tusks, and a powerful physique, standing at three meters tall. He often claimed to have half-troll blood in him, making him look even more imposing and robust than Pet. Pet and Bart were not close, but their positions were similar; they were both warlords commanding major Orc legions. However, unlike Pet, who was completely loyal to the Orc Emperor, Bart was a follower of the First Prince of the Orc Royal Court.
After their routine pleasantries, the two Orc warlords got down to business. Pet explained his mission and the events that had transpired in the underground black market.
“I never expected such a daring thief to appear on my territory!” After hearing the lion beastman Pet’s account, the short-tempered Bart’s eyes turned red. He slammed his massive, bristly claw onto the table, and the sturdy marble tabletop cracked. “I will immediately order the soldiers to blockade the entire Whirlwind Dunes.”
Bart said in a deep voice. He had to handle this matter properly. Although his allegiance was to the First Prince, the Orc Emperor had not yet abdicated, and outwardly, everything had to revolve around the Orc Emperor. He was not the contact for this secret mission, but the Sea God’s Tear had indeed been lost within the Whirlwind Dunes. When the Orc Emperor settled accounts, he wouldn’t care who was responsible. At that time, both he and Pet would be in trouble!
With Bart’s command, the Orc soldiers stationed in the Whirlwind Dunes quickly blocked all exits. These soldiers were all Orc infantry. They were tall and burly, wielding giant axes, and their robust bodies were clad in half-plate armor, giving them a fierce appearance. The merchants and buyers preparing to leave the Whirlwind Dunes were displeased by the Orcs blocking their way. However, after weighing their purses and their lives, they obediently stood in place, wondering what was happening that the administrator of the Whirlwind Dunes was making such a fuss.
