Chapter 2: New Century (Epilogue)
The shocking realization of what it was made of hit Ruo Yi, and for a moment, her entire worldview crumbled.
“How is this possible…”
She murmured to herself in a daze. She had lived for over twenty years and seen all sorts of ingredients, but this was the first time. Moreover, the ingredients were far too stimulating. Of course, these feelings of shock were fleeting.
Soon, Ruo Yi reacted. She had eaten flower cakes before, which were infinitely close to what she had eaten: Loli’s “little butterflies.” That was even more stimulating!
And this was simply unfair. She had always thought her and Xi Wei’s level of openness was relatively high, especially since Loli always appeared so pure and cute. Now, she realized she was still too naive. The little maid she thought was pure and cute had reached such a level of openness.
“No! I have to be a part of this!”
Ruo Yi gritted her teeth, a determined flame flashing in her eyes.
Connie stood to the side, trembling. Seeing Ruo Yi frown and clench her fist, she thought Ruo Yi was angry. She wanted to comfort her, but glancing at the five milk bottles she held, that thought immediately vanished. Furthermore, it strengthened her resolve to act secretly in the future. This secret must not be discovered by anyone else. Otherwise, wouldn’t this little dragon be sliced up and served on a plate?
Ruo Yi’s emotions were clearly unstable right now. The longer she stayed here, the higher the risk of exposure. She needed to find a way to escape!
Connie calmed her racing heart, hugged the milk bottles, and gave Ruo Yi a warm, cute smile. “Sister Ruo Yi, I’ve told you the secret. If there’s nothing else, I’m leaving. I still need to bring milk to Master…”
“Milk?”
Ruo Yi glanced at the five milk bottles in Connie’s arms, a cold glint in her eyes. “What milk… Does Master like to drink milk a lot recently?”
Fearfully, Connie took two steps back, her short legs trembling. “Uh… Master just wants to drink some milk recently, so he asked me to prepare some for him…”
Before Connie could react, Ruo Yi’s hand shot out. Connie felt a flash of golden light, and only four milk bottles remained in her arms.
“Speaking of which, Connie, when I came into your room just now, I could smell a very rich milky scent. So, I plan to use one bottle to make flower cakes. As for compensation… someone will bring you milk before dusk, so please be sure to receive it.”
With that, Ruo Yi’s figure turned into a golden light and disappeared. Her hurried appearance clearly indicated she was off to make flower cakes.
“Huh?!” Connie stretched out her hand and weakly called out. But in the end, there was nothing she could do. There was no way to get the milk bottle back, so she could only sigh and give up. Now, all she could do was pray that Ruo Yi wouldn’t discover the milk’s special properties… Otherwise, this dragon could be sliced and roasted at any moment. Just thinking about being skewered on a spit, with flames roasting her skin, and yet being unable to die no matter how many times she was cooked, sent a shiver down her spine. She didn’t want to be strung up like a kebab. If possible, she’d rather be “skewered” by Xi Wei.
…
…
Just after lunch.
Xi Wei was reviewing memorials from the Wintery Empire while observing the “Nobody Does Human Things” squad’s actions. Loli had already left to prepare a special “love heart” dinner. As for Ruo Yi, she had been nowhere to be found. According to the castle guards, Ruo Yi had gone out in a hurry and returned with bags and bags of unknown purchases. Later, she occupied the kitchen, and the royal chefs were given the afternoon off, resuming work tomorrow.
The “Nobody Does Human Things” elite squad had just made contact with the City Lord of Pine City. Other than that, there were no further developments. They were currently investigating and searching the warehouse of Pine City Castle for a missing batch of Wintery Empire standard equipment.
The players’ strength had generally reached level forty or so. Elite players like “Nobody Does Human Things” were stuck at level forty-nine. To reach level fifty, they had to hunt a level six (51-60) monster alone, which was a necessary condition for players to level up, and even Xi Wei couldn’t change it.
The Kaien Continent’s advancement had very high requirements for mental will. Although the system could simplify the players’ leveling process to experience points, it couldn’t completely alter Kaien’s rules. If a player could single-handedly kill a level six monster, whether through traps or poison, it demonstrated their courage to face powerful enemies alone. As long as they could take that step and win, they would naturally break through the level bottleneck. Xi Wei had also gone through this. In the years before he had the system, fighting monsters in the forest was a common occurrence. His father, Duke Manhattan, would even specially purchase powerful monsters for him and his brother to practice against.
No one’s success came naturally. Even now, standing on the threshold of legendary, Xi Wei had experienced countless wars, and the bones of those who fell beneath him were countless. Whether it was seizing the throne, the demon invasion of Most City, or the later Emerald Fortress battle, these were all baptismal fires etched into the souls of any knight, stepping stones for their spiritual sublimation.
“The players’ strength still needs to improve,” Xi Wei muttered to himself, stroking his chin. He planned to emulate his father. He would specifically capture some level six monsters to serve as whetstones for the players’ advancement. Of course, for the sake of recycling, it was only necessary to defeat these monsters, not necessarily kill them completely.
In addition to monsters, top-tier Great Knights, and even himself and Clemon in mirror dungeons could serve as whetstones, but players would likely lose in a one-on-one fight. This was because most players currently released skills in a system-assisted mode. Only a small portion of players, such as “Leisurely Moment” and “Nobody Does Human Things,” could activate combat skills through physical sensation and understanding. The damage output was identical, but the former was rigid and inflexible, only able to defeat weaker opponents. Only by integrating and understanding, like the latter, was there a possibility of challenging higher levels.
[Knock, knock, knock.]
There was some movement at the window. Xi Wei turned his head and saw Connie excitedly flapping her small wings, holding four milk bottles. Her soft little face was tensed, and she kept looking around as if on guard against any movement. Seeing her adorable and naive appearance, Xi Wei couldn’t help but find it amusing. He opened the window and let the silly dragon fly in.
“Darling!”
The moment she saw Xi Wei, Connie placed the milk bottles on the table and threw herself into his arms, her face crumpled like a steamed bun. She poured out her troubles, “Master, you almost wouldn’t see your dragon-dragon today!”
“What happened?” Xi Wei asked curiously. “Who in Winter City could possibly do anything to you?” He gently embraced the soft and fragrant silly dragon. The little girl knelt on his lap, her small hands wrapped around his neck, her whole body emitting a sweet milky scent. If he closed his eyes, he would think he was holding a soft ball of cheese.
