Chapter 2: New Century (Epilogue)
“Leader, this envoy is truly amazing. He was afraid we’d starve and cooked us porridge. The best part is how cheap it was, and even better, he added vegetables!”
One orc picked out a piece of vegetable from his bowl and stuffed it into his mouth, his face showing an expression of bliss.
Orcs loved meat, but they often didn’t get to eat much of it.
When the Demi-human Empire still existed, they would hunt demi-humans.
Demi-human meat was very delicious, unlike human meat which had a sour taste.
But after the Demi-human Empire was destroyed and they were now integrated into the current Wintery Empire, they could only prey on some animals in the desert.
However, there weren’t many animals in the Death Desert.
Venom Dragons, Kodo beasts, and camels were good means of transportation and could not be killed.
Besides them, desert quick hares, sand foxes, sand wolves, and even scorpions with a bit of meat in them were almost wiped out by them.
Later, due to the harsh living environment, subsequent generations of orcs preferred to eat human rice, which was the highest priority supply they could exchange for monster cores.
“Yes, this human is indeed good.”
Pet nodded in agreement, stuffing the rye bread in his hand into his mouth.
He didn’t know how these humans did it, managing to make rye bread, which was harder than carrying bricks, so soft.
A group of orcs gathered around the campfire, eating and singing melodious songs under the stars and moon, their songs filled with a sense of wildness and freedom.
They still remembered their special identities, so they sang in Goblin.
Far from their homeland, they rarely experienced a moment of comfort.
…
The next day, at dawn, Bart, who was fast asleep, was woken up by Pet.
It was only five o’clock in the morning, and the sun had not yet risen. At the end of the horizon, the glow of dawn was still hidden behind the mountains.
“Roar! Damn it! Pet, you’d better give me a good reason!”
Bart grumbled angrily, patting the ground, his loud voice also waking up the other orcs.
“An orc who hasn’t had enough sleep cannot go to the battlefield, it will cost them their life!”
“We don’t need to go to the battlefield yet.”
Pet pulled Bart up from the ground and retorted with a hearty laugh, “Everyone get up, we have to go to Most City to buy the last batch of tickets. I asked the envoy yesterday, Most City opens its gates at six in the morning, and this is the best time to buy theater tickets. After buying tickets, we’ll go to that Granny Yuan’s bean soup rice for a meal, and then spend 10 silver coins to enjoy a foot massage. Isn’t this a beautiful thing?”
The orcs contemplated the blueprint Pet had drawn for them and felt a sense of brightness before their eyes!
They were no longer sleepy and immediately got up from the ground with a flip.
“I think you’ve lost your mind, Pet!”
Bart still had some resentment in his heart, but he mumbled and didn’t say anything more.
The orcs tidied themselves up simply, to make themselves look as presentable as possible. Although their boots still exposed their toes and their bodies were still covered in dust, at least their faces were relatively clean.
Around 5:30 AM, they arrived at the gates of Most City.
The guarding knight was having breakfast. When he saw a large group of strong men emerging from the darkness, he was so scared that he almost dropped the steamed bun in his hand. He quickly drew his sword and took a defensive stance.
“Don’t panic! We’re friendly, Knight Sir!” Pet flashed a smile that he thought was kind, but it only made the knights more nervous.
Perhaps due to a shift change, the knights guarding the gate today were not the same two from yesterday. Pet had to present the leader’s badge of the Berserk Mercenary Group again.
“Look, I’m the leader of the Berserk Mercenary Group. I registered yesterday!”
One of the knights compared the registration form and then breathed a sigh of relief.
They were still a bit sleepy in the early morning, but this group of strong men had thoroughly energized them.
“You can wait, when Most City’s clock strikes three, we will open the gates immediately.”
After speaking, the knight returned the badge to Pet. Seeing Pet still looking at him expectantly, he patiently asked curiously:
“Do you have anything else? There aren’t many people now, I’m still willing to answer some of your questions.”
Pet chuckled dryly, rubbing his hands and said sheepishly, “Sir Knight, can we really get tickets for the play at six o’clock? Why don’t you do us a favor and let us go in early? Look at our more than two hundred people, how regrettable it would be if two or three of us couldn’t get tickets and get in.”
“What tickets are you trying to buy? The theater is already out of tickets.”
The knight looked at Pet strangely.
Theater tickets usually sold out within three days. It had already been a week, and the play was about to be staged, so where were there any tickets left?
“How is that possible? The envoy told me yesterday that standing tickets are 50 silver coins each!” Pet exclaimed, astonished.
“Standing tickets?” The two knights looked at each other, almost bursting into laughter.
One of the knights, suppressing his laughter, explained:
“As long as you get there early enough, there’s no need to buy standing tickets, because the windows outside the theater are public areas. If you stand there early, no one can drive you away. Only some vendors fool outsiders and create these ‘standing tickets.’ They actually hire people to occupy the spots in advance and then sell this so-called spot to unsuspecting outsiders.”
“Ah! So that’s how it is!” Pet felt a sense of being deceived.
Was Bryant deceiving them?
Or did Bryant himself not know about these things?
Pet was a little dazed, but soon this confusion and displeasure were replaced by the joy of being able to watch the play for free with “standing tickets” today!
Time came to six o’clock in the morning.
Most City’s clock struck three times.
As the gates of Most City slowly opened, the breathing of the orcs became heavier, and they even exuded a faint killing intent.
Watching the opening widen until it was enough for an orc to pass through, Pet raised his hand, his face contorted into a fierce expression, and roared:
“Charge! For the play!”
“Charge! For the play! For the glory of the play! The play will never be enslaved!”
The orcs roared simultaneously, like evil dogs released from their cages. They charged towards the theater according to the map, with immense momentum, charging forward without hesitation.
By this time, many small shops on the street had already opened.
A young girl selling tea leaves, seeing a group of ferocious strong men charging, quickly closed her shop door in fear.
“Oh! Darling, bandits are attacking the city!”
She screamed and ran upstairs.
Now she needed a warm and strong embrace, not her lover. Her lover was useless except for his good looks and could not protect her at all.
Similar incidents were happening everywhere in Most City.
In front of the theater, many vendors who had reserved spots were already in place, including the envoy.
“Mr. Val, I heard you hired about two hundred laborers yesterday and made a fortune?”
“Hahaha, not at all, just a little bit of money.” The envoy waved his hand dismissively.
“Boom, boom, boom—”
Suddenly, the sound of thousands of horses galloping came from the street corner.
The sound grew louder and closer.
Light smoke began to rise from Most City.
As the first strong man’s figure emerged from the street corner, followed by a large group behind him! That light smoke was actually the dust kicked up by their frenzied running!
It’s that group of big dimwits!
Could it be that the plan was exposed?
The envoy was stunned, and then broke out in a cold sweat.
“Roar, I suddenly remembered I haven’t defecated this morning. Let’s talk about this business another time…”
He found an excuse, slipped away, and quickly bolted.
