Chapter 658
Selene’s Birthday Banquet
March 1st, Morning.
Eternal Holy Kingdom, The Fifth Ring.
To celebrate Selene’s birth, Eivass took Lily and Selene out for a good meal.
Since it was Selene’s “Birthday Banquet,” Selene naturally got to choose what they ate.
However, Eivass hadn’t expected that Selene would choose a whole roasted lamb…
“…Are you sure about this, Selene?” Eivass couldn’t help but ask.
Eating something like this before dawn was too strange; he couldn’t imagine where they could buy it.
But this wasn’t a big problem, as in the Holy Kingdom, you could buy almost anything you wanted. Still, from another perspective… Eivass didn’t know Selene’s connection to lambs, but she genuinely had the square pupils of a lamb. This sounded as bizarre as Harpies eating roast chicken, or merfolk eating grilled fish.
“It’s as strange as Harpies eating roast chicken, or merfolk eating grilled fish… Dad probably thinks so, right?” Selene smilingly voiced Eivass’s thoughts. Her demonic blood-red square pupils possessed a pressure that could see through people’s hearts.
“I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it.” Selene sat to Eivass’s left, constantly trying to lift his hand and place it on her head. “After all, among animals… it’s always the big fish eating the small fish. The strong eating the weak, I don’t see any problem with that.”
After Eivass’s correction, Selene, being adaptable, quickly fixed the bug where she called Eivass “Mom.” However, she soon shifted to calling him “Dad.” Considering that part of her body was indeed constructed from Eivass’s flesh and blood—and ultimately, it was Eivass’s Shepherd’s Method that awakened her—this naming wasn’t entirely wrong. It was similar to how people who raise pets sometimes call them son or daughter… Selene and Eivass’s relationship was far more intimate than that.
Beside them, Lily clearly felt somewhat at a loss. She sat on Eivass’s other side, unsure if she should stop Selene’s behavior. After all, Selene was partly her own creation—yet Lily herself absolutely dared not engage in such absurd and futile actions, nor utter such strange words. She also didn’t know if she should just watch or turn her head away and pretend not to see.
So, Lily tried to change the subject: “How about I go call Mr. Hermes…”
“Don’t worry about Sherlock. Didn’t I leave him a Sandwich?” Eivass shook his head. “He’s reached a critical point in studying his Grimoire. Given his personality, he hates wasting time and pointless noise the most at such a moment. Although he’ll come if I ask you to call him, he’ll likely be unhappy. It’s better to let him finish reading properly.”
The threshold for that Grimoire, ‘The Fool’s Eulogy Grimoire,’ was incredibly high—Eivass had curiously glanced at Sherlock’s back a few times and felt dizzy. He concluded that he truly had little potential for the Path of Wisdom. Even Sherlock, after studying it for so many days, hadn’t fully understood it. Today, Sherlock said he had a premonition that he could understand the Grimoire, so Eivass decided not to bother him.
“If luck is on our side… by the time we go home today, we might see Sherlock mastering this Mysterious Art,” Eivass said cheerfully. It wasn’t that he needed Sherlock to help him with anything. He was simply happy for his friend’s progress.
“…This is the first time I’ve known Young Master to cook,” Lily said somewhat strangely. She had suffered a severe depletion of Life force towards the end of her ritual—after all, she had split off another self from within her own body. It was like having a serious illness, lacking the strength to lift heavy objects, and even stumbling when walking. Eivass naturally wouldn’t let Lily, in such a poor state, do housework. After Eivass briefly restored her, he made breakfast for Sherlock, who wasn’t planning to go out.
“It’s just an ordinary Sandwich…” Eivass said casually. In his past life, he had lived with roommates outside. Although his roommate, whose name he couldn’t recall, was very good at taking care of others, he still had to have basic housework skills—he couldn’t push all the chores onto someone else, right? Even if the other person had a good temper, you couldn’t order them around like that. Friendship would wear out. When the other person was truly exhausted and unwilling to cook, Eivass still had to step in. After all, he remembered that his friend didn’t like takeout…
Thinking of this, Eivass felt a pang of sadness. His memories were so fragmented; only vague yet full emotions remained in his heart, but he couldn’t remember their names or see their faces. It was like adventuring with people in a dream, and only remembering a blurry general impression after waking up. Conversely… if Eivass’s memories were a part cut off from him by the Ring Heavenly Envoy, then he kept the memories of those people but severed the feelings associated with them. What was the use of holding onto these dry memories? It would be better to take them all away.
—Or give them all to me.
Such thoughts arose in Eivass’s heart. He desperately wanted to make himself more complete—the current Eivass always made himself feel fear. Because he didn’t know if he would still be himself after completing his past memories. But from another angle, Eivass didn’t know if his personality would drastically change, becoming a cold and indifferent person. He didn’t know if such a self would still be recognized by his current friends, family, and lover, nor did he know if he would still care about everything he cherished so much at that time…
As Eivass fell into thought, the whole roasted lamb from the Harpy-style restaurant named “Sky’s Saltiness” was served. As the name suggested, the restaurant’s specialty was a unique salt bowl. It looked like a type of stone, and meat, when rubbed against it, would gain a faint salty flavor. It was said that Harpies liked to use these bowls—they had a custom of eating wolves, sheep, eagles, and fish. They would roast various hunted meats and then rub them in these bowls to flavor them. Over time, due to their smoothness and saturated fat, they appeared crystal clear.
Just as the waitress was about to help carve the meat, Selene suddenly let out a beast-like growl. The waitress, with white wings and a holy, angel-like appearance, was startled. The beast-like aura emanating from Selene made the waitress tremble violently and unconsciously take a few steps back. Only when Eivass signaled her to leave did the “Miss Angel” flee in hindsight.
After she left, Selene rushed forward and tore into the roast meat with large bites. Her eating posture even startled Lily—she hadn’t expected Selene to lose her reason over roast meat. A visible black-red aura emanated from her. The usually docile and elegant black-haired girl now had a ferocious expression, drooling, and devouring the lamb like a starved, almost crazed beast. That posture… —It seemed more like the Path of the Beast than the Path of Love.
