Chapter 11: The Pest of Selfishness
A purple torrent of magical power leveled the ground, and at the last moment before the magic cannon struck, the body of Dark Butterfly transformed into countless gray butterflies that flew in all directions.
A small portion of those butterflies was devoured by the magic cannon, while the rest re-congealed into the form of Dark Butterfly in the air.
“Cough… this time you got lucky.” Luo Shuangyue, her face pale as paper, clutched her chest and glared fiercely at Xia Mo, who was being supported by Linglan.
Her current condition wasn’t much better than Xia Mo’s, and there was still one more magical girl in Xinghai City who hadn’t appeared.
If she didn’t leave quickly, she would be caught by the Magic Department and that magical girl, making it hard for her to escape.
Moreover, her sister was still waiting for her in the basement. If she delayed too long, she might raise her sister’s suspicions…
With a flap of her butterfly wings behind her, Luo Shuangyue once again used her Butterfly Transformation technique to leave the battlefield.
…
“Senpai! We won!” Luo Shuangxing cheered joyfully when she finally heard her director’s confirmed voice after anxiously watching the sky.
She had actually defeated such a powerful enemy alongside her senpai. It made her incredibly excited!
Hmph, Dark Butterfly is just our defeated foe. She talked about exterminating senpai, but it’s clearly herself who is going to be exterminated now.
Xia Mo swayed a bit, feeling a wave of intense weakness surging from deep within her body as Dark Butterfly departed.
The recent magic cannon had nearly drained all the power within her, and now she even found it difficult to maintain her transformation.
“We only temporarily repelled her. Hah, I need to leave now.” Covering her chest, she breathed lightly for a moment, not forgetting how she had escaped.
She still needed to return to find Shuangyue!
Although doing so would basically expose her identity to Shuangyue, Shuangxing was still unaware of who she truly was.
She didn’t want that good child, Shuangxing, to worry about her.
Hearing Xia Mo’s words, Luo Shuangxing also suddenly realized she couldn’t dawdle here. Her brother and Xia Mo were still waiting for her in the basement.
If her brother and Xia Mo couldn’t find her after reaching the basement, they would definitely be very anxious…
“Okay, senpai, you should go back and rest now.”
Watching the light purple magical girl fly up into the sky until she disappeared, Luo Shuangxing quickly surveyed her surroundings like a thief and then withdrew her magic wand, transforming into a beam of light as she rushed toward another exit of the underground shelter.
The building where her home was located had been reduced to rubble in the recent battle, so she could only go to another exit to enter the underground shelter and look for her brother.
Once outside the shelter, she de-transformed in a deserted corner and swiftly blended into the bustling crowd.
With the magical beasts having vanished, the residents in the underground shelter were flocking toward the exit, making it very difficult for Luo Shuangxing to go against the flow.
After a couple of steps forward, she suddenly spotted Xia Mo, who was being pushed along by the crowd.
Xia Mo’s face was filled with anxiety; she also wanted to move against the flow but lacked the strength that Luo Shuangxing had.
Luo Shuangxing quickly pushed through the crowd to pull Xia Mo out, but no matter how she looked around, she couldn’t find where her brother had gone.
“Xia Mo, where did my brother go?”
“Shuangyue… he…” Xia Mo opened her mouth but couldn’t say a complete sentence.
She had just de-transformed and rushed back. How would she know where Luo Shuangyue had gone?
But logically, Luo Shuangyue should have stayed with her, the one who was unwell. In this situation, Xia Mo really didn’t know how to explain.
“He’s still at the old place…”
“Still at the old place?!” Upon hearing those words, Luo Shuangxing’s heart skipped a beat. Could it be that her brother had encountered an accident?
If not, why would Xia Mo be here alone?
Her heart began to pound rapidly; Luo Shuangxing didn’t have time to think and dashed toward the direction of her home.
Big brother, you must not be in trouble!
Behind her, Xia Mo’s heart was also racing.
Shuangyue, you must be there!
A minute later, Luo Shuangxing arrived at the tunnel entrance leading to her home’s underground shelter and saw Luo Shuangyue sitting on the ground, holding her arm with bruises and swollen features.
“Brother!”
“You finally came! Ah, help me up.”
Luo Shuangyue had a fine layer of cold sweat on her forehead. Given her current disheveled appearance, Luo Shuangxing naturally assumed that her brother’s cold sweat was due to pain.
“What happened to you, are you okay?” Luo Shuangxing quickly supported her brother’s arm, her face full of concern.
“I accidentally fell down the stairs and rolled down.” Luo Shuangyue emitted a resigned tone.
“Wait a minute, let me treat your injury first.”
Taking out alcohol swabs and bandages from the first aid kit nearby, Luo Shuangxing began to skillfully clean Luo Shuangyue’s wounds.
“Ah… be gentle.”
“Don’t move! Blame your carelessness, brother!”
Pressing down on her brother’s arm, Luo Shuangxing emotionlessly applied the alcohol swab to Luo Shuangyue’s wound, causing Luo Shuangyue to let out suppressed cries of pain.
“The magical girls and magical beasts were battling so fiercely above. If I had run any slower, I would have been crushed under the ruins.”
“But Xia Mo managed to get to the basement just fine! In the end, you needed her to call for help.”
Xia Mo’s expression instantly turned awkward, and she waved her hands in a panic, “It was Shuangyue who protected me, that’s why I could get to the basement safely.”
“Oh, a hero saving the beauty.”
While using alcohol swabs to clean the wounds on Luo Shuangyue’s forehead, Luo Shuangxing muttered softly.
Luo Shuangyue remained silent, not responding. She couldn’t very well say that Xia Mo was actually a magical girl and didn’t need her help, could she?
Nor could she reveal that she had just had a confrontation with a magical girl and had ended up defeated.
Who would have thought that the injured Xia Mo could unleash such powerful strength and blast her into this state?
Now, Luo Shuangyue had also become the patient.
Meanwhile, the culprit responsible for Luo Shuangyue’s state was nervously sitting beside her, her hands tightly clasped together, occasionally glancing at Luo Shuangyue.
Open mouth, close mouth, open mouth, close mouth—anyone could see how conflicted she was feeling right now.
She truly wanted to have an honest conversation with Luo Shuangyue, but due to Luo Shuangxing’s presence, she could not do so.
Just a while ago, she had essentially transformed before Luo Shuangyue’s eyes; Xia Mo had disappeared upstairs, and the magical girl Rosemary had appeared. Ah, who could Rosemary possibly be? It was really hard to guess.
“Alright, I’ve done the simple treatment. Brother, you and Xia Mo should stay here; I’ll go call someone.”
With that, Luo Shuangxing rushed toward the exit of the shelter. Just the two of them, her and Xia Mo, couldn’t get Luo Shuangyue out of the shelter.
After she left, the atmosphere in the room suddenly became strange.
Xia Mo still bowed her head, not daring to say a word.
Luo Shuangyue leaned against the wall, her gaze drifting around the dim underground shelter, but it never settled on Xia Mo.
What should she say?
Not only did Xia Mo not know what to say, but Luo Shuangyue didn’t either.
Should she directly tell Xia Mo that she could only choose one between her and the magical girl?
Luo Shuangyue felt that her status in Xia Mo’s heart might not be that important. If she said so, Xia Mo might choose to let go in her pain and wholeheartedly pursue becoming a magical girl instead.
Some might say that if Xia Mo chose to let go, there are plenty of fish in the sea; Luo Shuangyue could just find another girl.
However, the problem was that Luo Shuangyue truly had feelings for Xia Mo!
Having been childhood sweethearts for so many years, their hearts had already resonated with each other. Although they had never formally confessed, they shared a special connection.
“Shuangyue, I’m sorry, I…” Finally, Xia Mo mustered the courage to want to tell Luo Shuangyue everything.
“I don’t want to hear it.” Luo Shuangyue covered her ears.
If knowing the truth meant losing Xia Mo, then Luo Shuangyue would rather choose to pretend to be deaf and mute. As long as Xia Mo didn’t tell her directly that she was the magical girl, Luo Shuangyue could act as if nothing had happened.
Only Dark Butterfly knew that Rosemary was actually Xia Mo, and Dark Butterfly was not Luo Shuangyue, right?
“You’ve always been by my side, never leaving, right?” Luo Shuangyue asked, gazing at Xia Mo, speaking each word clearly.
In her eyes was a hint of hope, hoping Xia Mo would follow along this line and maintain their relationship on this delicate edge.
Xia Mo didn’t speak.
With a choked voice, she threw herself into Luo Shuangyue’s arms, silently sobbing.
The first reason she hid her identity from Luo Shuangyue was naturally due to the regulations of the Magic Department, and the second was not wanting to worry Luo Shuangyue.
The third reason was that Luo Shuangyue often exhibited resistance to magical girls. Xia Mo feared that if Luo Shuangyue knew her identity, she would choose to sever ties with her.
But now, she realized she was wrong; she had limited her imagination of Shuangyue so much.
She really was too foolish.
“Yes, I have always been by your side, never leaving.”
Feeling the warmth of the girl in her arms, Luo Shuangyue thought helplessly in her heart that, well… this is fine too.
Xia Mo’s magic cannon showed her Xia Mo’s determination, a radiance so bright it seemed that nothing in the world could shake it.
At least it was impossible for her to make Xia Mo give up her identity as a magical girl with just a few words.
Moreover, Luo Shuangyue was a very selfish person. Why didn’t she want Xia Mo to become a magical girl? It was simply because she wanted Xia Mo to safely become her little wife!
Now, to prevent Xia Mo from becoming a magical girl and abruptly cut off all ties with her—that would be putting the cart before the horse, wouldn’t it?
Instead of constantly pressuring her, why not apply extreme pressure on Xia Mo through Dark Butterfly while also providing attentive care in her own capacity?
Gradually raising her status in Xia Mo’s heart, one day, she would be able to make Xia Mo willingly give up her identity as a magical girl!
“Take good care of yourself. I won’t take care of you if you get hurt in the future.” Luo Shuangyue whispered.
“Okay.”
“Don’t be impulsive when facing terrifying enemies, and don’t forget that someone is waiting for you to come back.”
“Got it…”
“Nothing else. You big fool.” Gently tapping Xia Mo’s head, Luo Shuangyue said irritably.
“Can you hold me a little longer?” Xia Mo didn’t let go but continued to hold onto Luo Shuangyue.
The understanding and support from a partner made her feel a renewed growth in her strength!
