The White Horn, driven into a panic by a swarm of Werewolves
Our movement drew a part of the swarm towards us. Good, the operation is going as planned. And most importantly, the one who hates me the most is leading them.
“You won’t escape!!”
He pursued us, blood splattering from his wounded body. He seems to be leading the swarm, but what a poor leader. The strength of Werewolves lies in their pack mentality, meaning they can coordinate their actions. But if their leader acts selfishly, the pack will quickly fall apart.
He broke branches as he came around to cut us off. His burly shoulders moved up and down.
“Pant, pant. You think you can escape?”
“That’s what I should be saying. Your hatred has blinded you. Because you acted on your own, you’ve left the others behind.”
What was he thinking, involving women and children in a battle? Numbers alone aren’t everything.
“I don’t care! I’ll kill you with my own hands!”
He lunged at us, spitting frothy blood from his mouth. In response, a fireball was unleashed from behind, meeting him. They collided in mid-air, momentarily illuminating the darkening forest. I can’t afford to focus only on him.
Werewolves attacked from the side, one after another. Philiana cut them down with her long sword. Blood splashed onto a tree, and a Werewolf slid across the ground.
“Phew, there’s no end to them. Dividing the swarm was a good idea, but it’s disadvantageous for us in this darkness.”
Even as she spoke, enemies continuously emerged from the shadows.
“Grrrrrrr! You! I’ll kill you! Absolutely kill you!”
That guy, he’s still standing after taking Elana’s attack. He’s strong, as befits a leader, but he’s at death’s door. If he moves any further, he’ll risk his life.
“What are you fighting for? Is it for your revenge that you brought women and children here?”
“Shut uuuuup!!!”
He came towards us with his mouth wide open. So, you want to fight me that badly? Then I accept your challenge.
The foul, fishy smell of his blood-soaked fur stung my nose. His killing intent felt like a lick across my cheek. I understood his next move. For some reason, I felt no fear; my mind was clear.
A thick arm swung down, aiming to crush my head. I ducked to avoid it. The exhausted enemy lost balance from the recoil of his blow. Still crouched, I slipped under his legs. Naturally, he turned to face me.
I wanted to strike as he turned, but he would twist and counter. If we traded blows, I would surely lose in terms of power. So, I retreated to create some distance.
Sharp claws grazed my face. He followed up with another attack from his other hand, which I also dodged by stepping back.
“Don’t run!”
Just as he moved, a flash of light surged from my back.
“Gaaah! Don’t interfere!”
Cecilia attacked him from behind. However, the fur seemed to have blocked her attack, and he didn’t fall. Instead, he seemed even more enraged. But that’s fine. Our greatest strength is team play. We each compensate for each other’s weaknesses and act in concert.
“What?! Ough!”
A female Werewolf leaped from the side. The enemy was confused by the attack from his own kind. Lauren must have been the one who did that. And now, a decisive blow.
“Piyo!”
Piyo descended from the sky and unleashed an explosion at point-blank range. She landed with a practiced spin.
“G-, Guhaaa, Damn it, Haaah, Haaah, I won’t let you escape.”
As the smoke cleared, the figure of the Werewolf collapsed in the darkness. He was on his knees but alive. It seemed he couldn’t stand after taking Piyo’s attack.
“Enough. Look around you. Everyone here risked their lives to join this battle, didn’t they?”
“Silence! Don’t say another word.”
He bared his teeth in anger, but I felt no fear. It was because I was the one feeling anger.
“Think again about why you’re fighting. Isn’t it for your race? It’s not just because they’re weak that women and children shouldn’t be involved in battle; it’s because they have a future. Now that Gulf has fallen, it’s your duty to protect your family.”
“Vvvu… It’s your fault! If it weren’t for you! Die, human!!”
He tore up the ground and lunged at me. It’s a shame. I hope a wise leader will one day emerge for the Werewolves.
I took a step forward, raising my dagger and shield overhead. The leaping giant fell from above, just as I predicted. The weight crashed down on my entire body. I desperately pushed back with my shield to avoid being crushed. The dagger I held above was apparently stuck in his stomach.
“Guff… Goaaaa…”
The dagger plunged deeper with his own weight. He writhed in agony, but he didn’t have the strength left to break free and escape. I could hear him panting, frothing at the mouth. Before his weight crushed me, I slid off to the side.
“Gabo, Gobo, Gohh.”
As he fell onto his back, likely from the electric shock, his body convulsed. I thought I should rejoin the others immediately. But even as I thought that, I saw new Werewolves heading our way.
